This is my great grandmother Mary Jane Combs holding ME! (Linda Wilson Brooks)
This has to Mary Jane holding her granddaughter, Carol Marie McKinley Wilson with Bob standing beside her. Mary Jane only had 4 grandchildren but she was never close to them. She didn't really have a relationship with her daughter. Grandma, Ruth Gray, said she was always jealous of her dad's first wife (who was dead when she married him) and was always mourning Annabelle. Grandma said she would take her to the cemetery and she would always cry.
Mary Jane Combs was born in Waverly, Ohio June 22, 1885 and died May 29, 1962 in Omaha, NE.
Mary Jane's father: Charles Lewis Combs, Born Aug 1842 in Pike Ohio and died May 27, 1920. He was an army sergeant from Aug 12, 1861 to Feb 14, 1865 in Company H 36 Ohio. It was listed that he suffered from chronic diarrhea.
I found this info about the Civil War:
Ohio units took part in all of the major battles and campaigns of the Civil War including Antietam, the Atlanta campaign, the Bermuda Hundred campaign, Carnifex Ferry, Chancellorsville, Chattanooga, Chickamauga, Cold Harbor, Forts Henry and Donelson, Franklin, Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, Harper's Ferry, Lookout Mountain, First and Second Manassas (Bull Run), Nashville, the Peninsular campaign, Perryville, the siege of Petersburg and the Battle of the Crater, Sherman's march to the sea, Shiloh, Spotsylvania Court House, Stones River (Murfreesboro), Vicksburg, and the Wilderness.

Charles Lewis Combs was married twice. His first wife was Amanda (1851-1881) and his 2nd wife was Ruth Ann Waldren or Waldron. Ruth Ann Waldren (Ruth Ann died Feb 13, 1930) was Mary Jane Combs's mother. She lived in the same neighborhood as Amanda. Charles would have been 43 when Mary Jane was born.
Amanda and Charles had 5 children so these would be my great great aunts and uncles:
Thorton Presley Combs (died Jan 19, 1932) ,Walter E., Bendenna (Dena Benjamin Combs died Mar 18, 1939), Willie H., Hattie E. Charles had 3 children with Ruth Ann: Mary Jane, James and Wesley.
Thorton Presley Combs, my great great uncle was supposedly grandma's favorite. I guess he was quite a character. He was a chauffeur for a famous Polish actress Pola Negri in the teens and 20's in Hollywood. She was very wealthy and famous and was labeled a femme fatale. I looked her up on Google and tried to confirm her chauffeurs name but couldn't find anything. She did a lot of silent films. You can still watch some of her movies on YouTube. Grandma Gray told me this story. She said that one time when Pola Negri was getting out of the car and lost her underpants. She said it didn't bother her a bit. Grandma was telling the story she heard growing up. Anyway, Pola told Thorton Presley Combs, "You should just smell my drawers and then said she meant dresser drawers. I can't imagine someone telling this story in front of kids. Grandma said Thorton was a character and was her grandma's favorite. Thorton's first wife died and then her married a German gal. They lived in Red Oak, Iowa and his wife was grandma's Aunt Dorthea.
Mary Jane Combs had a lot of 1/2 brothers: Thorton, Walter, Wilber, and 2 1/2 sisters: Bendenna, and Hattie. Walter lived in Chicago. I think Wilber was called Willie.
Grandma said she met Mattie, Martha Matilda. She said she was "papa's" sister. Papa is Simeon Rufus Wright and he was married to Mary Jane Combs. She was his 3rd wife. Grandma said mama used to call "papa" a bull headed Englishman. Mattie lived in Faucet, MO. Close to St. Joe. Simeon was from Albany, MO.
